Saw this jacket in a different size at a local store and loved it. Could not find a 2xlt however so I ordered it hoping the fit would work. It fits great, looks great & I can’t wait til it gets colder out so I can wear itGreat product for the $$!Though I don't have a lot of experience with good rain gear to compare to I can compare it to all those thin nylon plastic coated jackets out there. Well not really there is no comparison. Even the "good ones" fail compared to this jacket. I work outside, rain or shine, during all four seasons in Maine. In my younger years I didn't mind getting wet, now, I freeze to death and have a miserable day. So I decided it was time to dress properly. This jacket is not just a rain jacket, you could wear it as an every day jacket, and it's tough enough and made very well and could even be a regular work coat (FYI the same can be said for the Shoreline Bibs). It does not build up heat and humidity, though I have yet to wear it in 90 degree, 93% humidity Maine August. But when it arrived I put it and the bibs on and wore them in my 70 degree house for two hours doing normal things. I never got hot or clammy. It feels like a really heavy thick jacket, and it is as far as toughness, but the weight doesn't equal insulation. A note on sizing, I would generally wear a large, but I wanted this for four seasons in the colder months I wear a lot of layers. So I got the XL thinking I would need the space. Well I have the space alright lol. So to sum that up, order your normal size, you do not need to consider layering in your size choice. I'm tall with long arms, the sleeves are perfect if not a hair to long, the body has a bit to much extra space in the XL. I'm around 200-210lbs, 6'1, I feel the Large would have been a perfect fit.So far I have worn it through two nine hour rainy work days, one day was the all day, slow dreary drizzle that nobody likes. Jacket laughed it off.Second day was more of a shower all day, with wind. Again the jacket laughed it off.The only somewhat negative thing I've noticed which really isn't an issue for me, but might be for some depending on what your doing when you want to wear it. After being in all day rain, the jacket gains some weight. You don't get wet or damp, but the outer shell of the jacket does soak up water which makes it's way down the jacket and drips off, the harder the rain the heavier the jacket. Although this is a great way for the jacket to be rugged and be well waterproof at the same time, it has two issues, one the weight might be an issue for some and two, water pulls heat away from your body. The more water there is in the jacket the colder you get. This can be solved by layering, but can be difficult in some temperature ranges when trying to work. However, the coldness did not become an issue for me until later in the day when I was getting tired. Now a word on the toughness. I work in a Plant nursery, trees, shrubs, perennials I am the senior crew person. I spend my days wrestling root balls, climbing around in bushes, scraping through trees, tromping through mud, carrying anything from paper work to concrete blocks to a daisy for grandma. I work around heavy machinery and dangerous equipment. I run, walk, bend, climb, jump, lift, pull, pickup, put down, carry, and most of it is heavy, dirty, physical, wet, demanding work so all of my work gear gets very extensive testing.Order your regular jacket size, and you will not regret buying this jacket. I don't regret a single dollar spent and I got a size to big so.My husband and I walk every day, most often on the beach and outdoors for 2-3 hours, often in wet weather. This is his second jacket. Nothing wrong with the first one, but he was afraid when he actually needed another it might no longer be available—and in his favorite green color! This does the job keeping him comfortable even in a coastal downpour off the Pacific Ocean.Short and sweet:Great coat. This coat has kept me the driest I have ever been in the rain. They run a little big but that not a huge problem as it allows for wearing layers on cold days as it's not the warmest. Well made and sturdy coat.Long story:I live in the Northwest of the US and I often work outdoors. During the rain season, it pours. This coat is the best raincoat I have worn. The water just beads up and runs off. The coat itself does not absorb water and eventually become soaked like some fabrics There are pockets inside and out and both are good at keeping valuables dry. The provided hood is detachable via snap buttons if that is desired. The hood itself is very good and large enough to fit over a surprising amount of hair. The coat runs slight large. This may be intended as it allows for one to comfortably wear layers underneath for warmth. I do not recommend going a size down to compensate for the larger size. Do take note, however that the coat is not long. I am 6 foot (approx 1.8 meters) tall and ordered a large. The coat just barely meets the length is needed it to cover the pockets of the front of a pair of pants. The sleeves have an angled cut. The part of the sleeve that goes over the top of one's hand extend about 2 to 3 inches (5cm to 7cm) from the bottom. This allows for ones wrists to remain dry if you are wearing gloves as the angle cut extends over the top of to wrist. There is a draw string in the hem of the coat to allow it to be brought in closer to the waist. I work in this coat so I can say it's taken it's share of abuse. It has yet to rip from being snagged on a pointed surface. The outside pockets have held up very well from having tools constantly being drawn in and out of them. I have splashed motor oil on it and it wiped right off and did not stain the coat. It's hard to recommend this coat to someone who will not be out in the rain for considerable periods of time however, purely based on the price. If you're looking for a raincoat to just toss on when going from your car to indoors (where you're not expected to be outside in the rain for 30+ minutes) look elsewhere. A windbreaker augmented by an umbrella will be much more affordable. This coat is best for situations where you will be in the rain for hours at a time or if you are in an area where the volume of ran is very high. For anyone looking to work in this coat, it is 100% Nylon. It is a dark black and is not at all reflective. If getting in and out of a vehicle while working in the rain and wearing this coat, your seat will get soaked. The water repelling nature of this coat will transfer any water from the coat straight to your seat. This is very unfortunate if they are cloth/fabric seats. Overall I would recommend this coat.Pros:+Dry. Very dry.+Lots of pockets both inside and out+Durable. Well made.Cons:-Short. Taller individuals beware.-Pricey if not used regularly.I owned this jacket once before. I lost the hood and over time lost the whole jacket. Before I REPURCHASED it, I have given them as gifts to my male family members. They all love it and they all live in different climates. We all work, fish hunt, and camp in it. It is big enough to layer underneath without restritions of movement. Love the pockets that have a tag-line on the zipperpull, with flaps on them. Best jacket ever! I loved and missed it so much I ordered another one to replace my lost one. My old one was black (black was the only color I knew of then) but this grey one is just as awesome and now when I meet my family I have a unique one!I have collected 15 Carhartt coats over time, all styles old and new in the canvas fabric. This Storm Defender jacket is 100% waterproof and so, so comfortable. The outer shell fabric is phenomenal. You will love it so much you'll buy 2. I have the blue and gravel. NICE,NICE!!I needed a good coat that would would last. Only one choice. I needed something that would keep me warm pressure washer in the so called cold of Florida. It did the jobThis is by far the best waterproof jacket I've ever had. Since I got it (two weeks ago) its hardly stopped raining and I've found that it keeps me perfectly dry and warm even in a miserable UK December. Its also the most comfortable jacket and I've not ended up as wet on the inside as on the out due to getting too warm. I must admit to being a bit of a Carhartt fan. I've got another winter jacket, an arctic vest and various sweats and tee shirts by Carhartt. All have one thing in common, they're, brilliant quality, well made and look like outlasting me as I'm getting long in the tooth. As I have very broad shoulders and a barrel chest I usually take XXL but I always go for XL in Carhartt stuff and they fit fine. Can't recommend Carhartt or this Jacket highly enough. Buy it.Was a birthday present for my 17 year old - he wanted a Carhartt waterproof jacket and he is very happy with it - the size at worst is a little large on the body as he is a slim 17year old but length of jacket and arms are needed.I've gone though North face ( over-hyped ) MEC ( poor , flimsy zippers ) and Patagonia ( rain resistance wore out super fast ). I dislike the type of " breathable" rain protection where you have to re-spray your jacket every season or the rain just seeps through anyways. It's all marketing crap. This jacket feels different. It's kinda canvasy-like in texture, in a good way. Rain beads off and doesnt soak through. It's not "breathable" but at the same time it isnt overly restrictive. I usually take a large, but chose a medium, and it fits just right. The jacket has strong zippers ( sucks to be you MEC ) and feels tough and rugged. I use it for hiking and on the streets. Versatile . I will be keeping this jacket for many years. Justifiable price , unlike the other technical jackets. Also auch regenfest. Und schöne große Taschen.Mein neuer Begleiter von April bis OktoberJust received this coat/jacket. I haven't worn it outside in the rain yet. But its fits pretty much perfect. I'm 6'2'' 240lbs. I ordered the XXL. I could have probably gotten away with the XL as Carhartt products typically fit LARGE meaning whatever size you usually get in other brands, most of the time Carhartt's equivalent is one size down. Looks just like it does in the pics, comfy, lots of pockets the only thing I have yet to test is the Waterproofing. I may update this review once I test it in the rain.
